There is a meaningful difference between copying a key and making one. A copy traces the shape of whatever is placed in the machine, which means every duplicate of a worn key inherits that wear and drifts a little further from the shape the lock was built to accept. Cut the fourth copy of a copy and it starts to bind. A key maker works from the code, either read from the lock itself or held on record, and produces a key at factory dimensions no matter how tired the original has become.
Code Cutting and Duplication From a Penn State Erie, PA Locksmith Key Maker
Duplication is right when the original is in good condition and you want a spare today. It is quick, accurate enough for domestic use, and the least expensive route available.
Code cutting is the better answer when the original is worn, bent or missing. The technician reads the bitting from the cylinder or sources it from a record, then cuts to that specification so the new key sits correctly on every pin.
Keys Made Without an Original Across Penn State Erie, PA
Losing every copy is not the end of the lock. A cylinder can be decoded in place, which yields the bitting and allows a key to be cut without disassembly, or the cylinder can be removed, read on the bench and refitted.
Either approach costs less than replacing good hardware. Replacement only becomes the sensible option when the lock is already worn beyond service or the security level needs upgrading anyway.
If a key has started to need jiggling, stop duplicating it. Have a fresh one cut to code instead, because every copy taken from a worn key makes the next one worse.
Restricted and High Security Keys for Penn State Erie, PA Premises
Restricted keyways exist so that nobody can walk into a shop and copy a key without permission. Blanks are controlled, and duplication requires documented authorisation from the registered holder of the system.
We work within those rules rather than around them. If you hold a restricted system, bring the authorisation paperwork and the duplicates are produced correctly. If you want that level of control, the system can be set up for you.

Key Records and Spare Sets for Penn State Erie, PA Households and Businesses
Keeping a written code record for your locks turns a future emergency into a short appointment. With the code on file, a replacement is cut without decoding the lock first, which shortens the visit and lowers the cost.
For businesses, a managed spare set held securely off site prevents the familiar scramble when a key holder leaves suddenly. It costs very little to arrange and saves a disproportionate amount of trouble later.
